ISLAMABAD: The first meeting of the committee formed under the Makkah Mutual Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia will be held in Istanbul today, with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir representing Pakistan.
According to the Foreign Office spokesperson, the foreign and defence ministers as well as the chiefs of general staff of Türkiye and Saudi Arabia will also participate in the meeting.
The spokesperson said the meeting will review the framework of the mutual defence agreement and assess progress on its implementation.
Meanwhile, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed that Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has arrived in Istanbul, where he is scheduled to hold important meetings during his official visit to Türkiye.
According to sources, international security issues will be at the top of the meeting’s agenda. Discussions are expected to focus on strengthening defence capabilities, enhancing coordination among the armed forces and deepening cooperation in areas including joint production and manufacturing in the defence industry.
The meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for the three countries to review existing defence cooperation and explore further areas of collaboration under the agreement.
