ISLAMABAD: China has urged Pakistan to intensify its mediation efforts between Iran and the United States, emphasizing the urgent need to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, which has been partially closed amid rising tensions.

The report says that Wang had a telephonic conversation with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar to exchange views about the regional situation and tension between Iran and the US as well as about ceasefire talks.

Dar briefed Wang on the recent initiative taken by Pakistan with regard to mediation and thanked China for their support in conducting dialogues between Tehran and Washington. He stressed that cooperation between the two countries is essential to maintain regional stability and peace.

Praising Pakistan for playing an active role in mediating dialogues and extending the ceasefire duration, Wang urged Islamabad to take an active part in restoring peace in the region. Wang said that China will support mediation efforts taken by Pakistan and contribute to easing tension in the Middle East region.

According to the report published by Xinhua News Agency, the closing of the Strait of Hormuz has caused much harm to international trade and transport of oil, and a number of states have been making attempts to resolve the situation diplomatically.

Experts point out that Pakistan’s mediation with the support of China may play an essential role in resolving the conflict between Iran and the United States in order to avoid its further aggravation.
