KARACHI: Chaos reportedly broke out during Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi’s visit to Karachi, where Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers accompanying his convoy allegedly clashed with one another and attempted to take cameras from journalists covering the visit.
During the visit, a reporter directly questioned the chief minister, asking, “Is this the training your workers have received?” The reporter also raised the case of journalist Waqas Saleem, an Azad Digital correspondent who was reportedly attacked in Sukkur.
According to Saleem, he was assaulted when the convoy reached Shikarpur after he began recording footage of a confrontation among PTI workers. He said his mobile phone was damaged during the incident.
Saleem further claimed that when he complained to a protocol officer, the official allegedly used abusive language. He also alleged that Chief Minister Sohail Afridi did not respond to the issue and instead turned away when the matter of journalists being mistreated was raised.
Questions have also been raised over the alleged excessive use of official protocol during the visit. The convoy reportedly included government vehicles while travelling through Sindh, and Afridi continued his journey under heavy official security even after PTI workers returned from Shikarpur.
The controversial visit comes as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continues to face significant security and administrative challenges, including an increase in militancy, prolonged power outages and concerns over governance.
