Passenger car sales in Pakistan declined by 20% month-on-month in September, while overall automobile and motorcycle sales recorded growth, according to the latest industry figures.

A total of 10,897 passenger cars were sold in September, down from 13,642 units in August. Sales also fell 10% year-on-year.

In contrast, overall auto sales increased by 13% month-on-month to 220,310 units in September, marking a 24% rise compared with the same month last year.

During the first quarter of the current fiscal year, overall automobile sales grew by 28%, reaching 611,143 units.

Motorcycle sales rose 11% month-on-month to 195,626 units in September. Tractor sales recorded a significant increase of 73%, with 1,815 units sold during the month.

Sales of three-wheelers surged by 427% month-on-month to 6,876 units. Meanwhile, sales of light commercial vehicles, vans and jeeps increased by 126% compared with August.

Truck and bus sales also recorded growth, rising 13% year-on-year in September.

For the first quarter of the current fiscal year, passenger car sales increased by 43% to 41,707 units. Motorcycle sales rose 28% to 542,158 units during the same period.

Industry experts attributed the decline in passenger car sales to uncertainty surrounding sales tax and the new auto policy. Meanwhile, the announcement of Punjab’s Green Tractor Scheme helped improve demand for tractors.

The figures indicate mixed trends in Pakistan’s automobile market, with passenger car sales declining in September while motorcycles, tractors and other vehicle categories recorded gains.
