RAWALAKOT: A Ranger was killed and five security personnel were injured after violent clashes erupted in Rawalakot following the conclusion of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections, according to official statements.
Authorities said that after the successful conduct of the elections, members of the banned JAAC allegedly attempted to march towards Rawalakot. A police statement issued at around 10pm said the group opened fire after being stopped by law enforcement personnel, injuring two police officers.
Officials later said the group also attacked a security checkpoint on the outskirts of Rawalakot. During the assault, Ranger Ali Raza was killed, while three additional police personnel sustained injuries.
According to the authorities, the attackers also set fire to one Rangers vehicle and one police vehicle during the unrest.
Officials said law enforcement agencies exercised restraint and professionalism despite what they described as severe provocation, while taking measures to restore order.
The authorities alleged that the violence, including arson and attacks on security personnel, was aimed at disrupting the peaceful completion of the electoral process. They said attacks on government officials, public property and security forces reflected the group’s violent intentions.
Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property, maintaining public order and safeguarding the democratic process. They also urged the public to avoid rumours and misleading propaganda and to rely only on verified information.
