PESHAWAR: Following orders issued by the Peshawar High Court (PHC), the Peshawar Police have been mobilised to reopen closed highways across the province. Inspector General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, Zulfiqar Hameed, has instructed all regional and district police officers to remove obstacles hindering public movement and to ensure travel facilities are provided.
According to the Inspector General, the goal of reopening the roads is to alleviate the difficulties faced by citizens and restore normal traffic flow. Efforts to clear highways have been intensified in various districts to implement the court’s orders.
Police officials have stated that coordinated measures are being taken to restore traffic and maintain law and order. Main and connecting roads are being reopened in phases to provide the maximum relief to the public.
The Peshawar High Court had ordered the immediate opening of roads in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, expressing frustration over the road closures. During a hearing on a petition related to the PTI protest, Justice Ijaz Anwar questioned the Advocate General about any legal actions taken against those responsible for closing the roads.
“This is the fourth day that everything has been closed. What actions has the provincial government taken so far? How many FIRs have been registered against individuals?” he asked, noting that citizens were facing significant hardships, even risking their lives. Advocate General Shah Faisal replied that the court had preemptively declared responsibility without a hearing and requested more time to compile the necessary data, asserting that he is not representing any political party.
Justice Ijaz Anwar responded, pointing out that the Advocate General had acknowledged that individuals had closed the roads due to concerns about the treatment of the PTI founder. “We did not call you a representative of a political party. If you feel strongly about this issue, you are welcome to join the protest yourself,” he added.
