KOHAT: The death toll from the suicide bombing and terrorist attack at a mosque in the Old Police Lines area of Kohat has risen to 21, while 103 people have been injured, according to an initial report submitted by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Department.
The report, prepared by the Medical Superintendent of the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital and the District Health Officer Kohat, was sent to the provincial health secretary following the attack on the mosque located along Hangu Road.
According to the report, the incident occurred at around 1:20 pm on Friday during congregational prayers, after which an estimated five to seven armed attackers launched an assault.
Among those killed were 15 police personnel and six civilians. The deceased civilians included Dr Israel Khan Orakzai, Chief District Specialist (Paediatrics) at Liaquat Memorial Hospital.
Of the 103 injured, 73 were police personnel and 30 were civilians. A total of 90 injured people were taken to DHQ Hospital, while another 13 were shifted to Liaquat Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Hospital authorities said 34 injured people have been admitted and are receiving medical care. Emergency surgeries were performed on five critically injured patients.
Four of the seriously wounded patients were subsequently transferred to major hospitals in Peshawar after their condition was described as critical.
A high alert has been maintained at relevant medical facilities across the area, while healthcare teams continue to provide treatment and monitor the condition of those injured in the attack.
Authorities are continuing their response to the incident as security and clearance operations remain underway in the area.
