KOHAT: Security forces are conducting an operation at the Kohat Police Lines following a terrorist attack on a mosque in the Old Police Lines area, with senior military officials overseeing the operation at the site.
According to security sources, Pakistan Army and police personnel moved into action after receiving reports of an explosion involving an explosives-laden vehicle and the entry of armed attackers into the police lines.
Major General Shahid Amir Afsar, commander of the 9 Infantry Division in Kohat, is present at the Police Lines and is overseeing the security and clearance operation, according to the sources.
Security forces have cordoned off the Police Lines and surrounding areas as the operation continues amid an exchange of heavy gunfire.
The ongoing clearance operation is aimed at eliminating the threat posed by the attackers and securing the area following the attack.
Earlier, a blast at the mosque in Kohat Police Lines reportedly killed 16 people and injured 57 others, according to the information provided by authorities.
