Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed serious concern over negligence by federal ministries in implementing his decisions and has issued clear directives to the heads of 41 federal secretaries and departments to ensure prompt, serious action.
The Prime Minister’s Office issued the directives after identifying negligence by a specific federal ministry in implementing the PM’s orders.
“Efforts to Make Governance Effective Being Undermined According to an official memorandum, the name of the ministry was not mentioned, but reference was made to a specific incident that prompted the PM Office to issue the instructions.
The memorandum stated that the Prime Minister expressed concern over the “non-serious attitude” of the relevant ministry in implementing his orders. It noted that this attitude is undermining efforts to ensure immediate implementation and make governance effective to deliver results on matters of public interest.
The PM Office said that the negligence of a particular ministry and its attached departments is causing unnecessary delays in the implementation of the Prime Minister’s decisions. There is also a lack of necessary inter-ministerial coordination required for the execution of these decisions. The Prime Minister took serious note of the delays, lack of focus on the objectives, outcomes, and follow-up of his directives, which, the memorandum said, is not in line with the government’s commitment to “responsible, transparent, and accountable governance.
To prevent such conduct in the future, the following instructions were issued for timely implementation of the Prime Minister’s policy directives must be ensured. An effective follow-up mechanism must be put in place to monitor the results of every decision. Sources said the PM Office will now also seek monthly reports from each ministry on all pending decisions.
This development comes at a time when there is intense debate in the country over weak governance and delays in the implementation of government decisions. Just days ago, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also raised concerns about the failure of the governance system.
