In a heart-warming display of interfaith neighbourly love, a Christian man in Egypt won a free Umrah pilgrimage package through an Islamic religious competition with a single purpose: to gift the prize to his Muslim neighbor.
Mina, whose friendship with his neighbour Um Ali spans more than 20 years, tuned into a social media livestream hosted by Egyptian Islamic preacher Dr. Ayman Abu Omar. He noticed that Um Ali was participating in the broadcast’s Quranic knowledge contest, hoping to win a sponsored trip to Mecca.
Knowing how deeply meaningful the pilgrimage was to her, Mina decided to enter the contest himself under his own name to boost their chances. He jokingly told her that they would both participate so that if she didn’t win, he might still secure the prize on her behalf. To maximize his odds, Mina submitted the correct answers between 50 and 60 times.
His strategy paid off when he was officially selected as a winner. When Mina broke the news, he watched from his balcony as Um Ali wiped away tears of joy at her home. She later shared that performing Umrah had been a lifelong dream she constantly prayed for while she was still physically able to make the journey.
The touching story quickly went viral across Egyptian social media, with thousands praising Mina’s gesture as a powerful testament to the deep bonds of unity, respect, and coexistence between Muslim and Christian neighbours.
