With electricity prices continuing to put pressure on households across Pakistan, consumers are looking for ways to reduce their monthly power bills, particularly during the summer when air conditioner usage rises significantly.

The increased use of air conditioners (ACs) during hot weather can substantially raise electricity consumption. However, experts suggest that households can lower their energy use while maintaining a comfortable indoor environment by making a few simple adjustments.

One of the most effective measures is to set the AC temperature at 26°C or higher instead of running it at very low temperatures. Experts say that increasing the thermostat setting by each degree may help reduce energy consumption by around 1% to 3%, although actual savings vary depending on factors such as the AC’s efficiency, room size and outdoor temperature.

For example, operating an AC at 26°C instead of 22°C can require less electricity and potentially reduce monthly power costs.

Consumers are also advised to replace conventional bulbs with LED lights, which generally consume less electricity, and unplug electronic devices when they are not in use to avoid unnecessary power consumption.

Completely switching off an AC during extremely hot weather may not always be the most efficient option. If indoor temperatures rise significantly, the unit may have to run for longer periods to bring the temperature back down. In some situations, raising the thermostat rather than switching the AC off completely can be a more practical approach.

Humidity can also affect how hot a room feels. Higher humidity may make the same temperature feel warmer and more uncomfortable, meaning temperature settings alone do not determine indoor comfort.

Experts generally recommend keeping an AC between 24°C and 26°C as a starting point to strike a balance between comfort and energy efficiency.

While the exact amount saved depends on individual circumstances, adjusting AC settings and adopting energy-efficient habits can help households manage electricity consumption during the summer months.
