PESHAWAR: To improve access to safe drinking water in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a new water-quality monitoring initiative is being implemented across the province with the support of the federal govrnment.
Under this new federal government project, water-testing equipment has been installed in laboratories across KP, while nine mobile water-testing laboratories have also been made operational.
The initiative aims to strengthen water testing and help provincial authorities identify contamination in drinking-water sources and take timely action. The testing, monitoring and surveillance of drinking-water quality will improve the ability of government departments to identify water contamination and take timely action.
Technical staff from relevant government departments have also been trained in water-quality testing and surveys to improve their ability to monitor drinking-water sources.
The project will directly benefit people living in urban and peri-urban areas of KP, particularly communities with limited access to safe drinking water. The initiative is being implemented in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which focuses on clean water and sanitation.
A centralised water-quality monitoring system is also being developed to support regular testing, reporting and assessment of drinking-water quality. The project could further strengthen cooperation with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and other development partners on water, sanitation and hygiene projects in KP.
