MUZAFFARABAD: Azad Jammu and Kashmir Inspector General of Police Captain (retd) Liaquat Ali Malik has accused the banned Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) of trying to create unrest in the region and spreading what he described as anti-state propaganda.
Speaking at a ceremony in Muzaffarabad on ‘Police Martyrs’ Day’, the AJK police chief made serious allegations against the banned JAAC over the death of police officer Aqib, who he said died while being taken to hospital in an ambulance.
Liaquat Ali Malik claimed that members of the banned group, who presented themselves as supporters of peace, kidnapped family members who had arrived to receive the martyr’s body. He also alleged that the family was subjected to violence and humiliation and that videos were recorded during the incident.
“Those who sit outside and abuse Kashmir Police should ask Aqib’s father about the reality,” the IGP said. According to the police chief, Aqib died in an ambulance after sustaining injuries, while the banned JAAC kept his body for four days before handing it over.
Liaquat Ali Malik also questioned what he described as the group’s narrative against the police, saying people should consider the facts before forming an opinion. He questioned whether those who allegedly attacked and burned people alive should be considered victims, or those who lost their lives while protecting the country.
The police chief also criticised what he called a double standard, saying police officers were labelled as oppressors even when they were injured by gunfire, while those firing at them were portrayed as victims. “What kind of justice is this?” he questioned.
The IGP said the alleged campaign against the state and efforts to create unrest in AJK had failed totally, adding police would continue to perform their duties and protect the people and the region.
