Spain defeated France 2-0 in the first semifinal of the FIFA World Cup 2026, securing a place in the final for the first time in 16 years.
Spain dominated proceedings from the outset, putting France under sustained pressure with an aggressive attacking display. Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring in the 24th minute, calmly converting a penalty to give Spain the lead.
The Spaniards extended their advantage in the second half when Pedro Porro found the net in the 58th minute, effectively ending France’s hopes of a comeback.
Regarded as one of the tournament’s favourites, France struggled to break through Spain’s disciplined defence and well-organised tactical setup.
Spain’s goalkeeper and backline delivered a composed performance, denying the French attack any clear scoring opportunities throughout the match.
With the victory, Spain advanced to their first FIFA World Cup final since 2010, when they lifted the trophy by defeating the Netherlands to claim their maiden world title.
Spain will face the winner of the second semifinal between Argentina and England in the World Cup final, while France will compete in the third-place playoff.
