SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: A woman has been appointed as a member of the Dispute Resolution Council (DRC) in Upper South Waziristan for the first time in the history of Pakistan’s tribal districts, marking a significant development in women’s representation in local decision-making.
Social activist Razia Mehsud has been appointed as a member of the DRC; it has been considered a milestone for women’s participation in the process of justice administration in the former tribal districts of Pakistan.
As per the notification released by the Regional Police Officer (RPO), Dera Ismail Khan region, the 17 member Dispute Resolution Council has been reconstituted on the recommendation of District Police Officer (DPO) Upper South Waziristan Arshad Khan for the first time, a woman member has become part of this council.
Local tribal, political and social circles have welcomed the historic development, saying that Razia Mehsud’s appointment may help resolve community disputes effectively, especially those related to women’s issues.
