ISLAMABAD: Despite continuous efforts to eradicate polio in the country, the presence of polio virus has once again been detected in environmental samples from various districts.

Analysis of sewage samples collected from various districts of the country in May 2026 has confirmed the presence of polio virus in some districts of Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC), sewage samples from Kashmore, Qambar, Karachi District East and Karachi District West in Sindh have tested positive for polio virus.

Polio virus has also been found in environmental samples from Dera Bugti and Chaman in Balochistan.

Similarly, the presence of polio virus has also been confirmed in sewage samples from Peshawar and Bannu in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

On the other hand, all environmental samples from Punjab, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and Islamabad have tested negative for polio virus.
