WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has claimed that senior American and Iranian officials will hold talks in Doha tomorrow, following what he described as a request from Tehran.

In a post on social media, Trump said that the meeting between US and Iranian representatives has been arranged in Doha at Iran’s request, amid renewed diplomatic activity between the two countries.

The US and Iran have not yet officially confirmed the meeting.

This announcement comes against the backdrop of high tension between the two countries, with relations being strained due to several reasons relating to the region and security.

On the other hand, some earlier diplomatic engagements between the two nations include some talks in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, where the signing of a memorandum of understanding was done using an electronic medium.

As per reports, Pakistan’s top leadership, comprising of its Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, and Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir was also present in the process of diplomacy aimed at fostering the dialogue between the two sides.

Pakistan seems to have served as a diplomatic facilitator in bringing together US and Iran for engagement, and officials seem hopeful of reaching an agreement between the two within 60 days.

Some more information about the Doha meeting is awaited, as well as official confirmation from both sides.
