AI education is now compulsory for all students across Pakistan

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has directed all public and private universities in Pakistan to establish a required three-credit Artificial Intelligence (AI) course, which they must teach to all undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The HEC informed university leaders through its official letter that institutions must teach AI education because it has become an essential requirement for modern education needs.

The commission developed the course to help students acquire digital literacy skills and practical knowledge about ethical obligations, data security, open organisational practices and the societal consequences of artificial intelligence systems.

The letter explained that universities may offer the course as an elective subject, an interdisciplinary course, or a supporting subject within existing programs. The curriculum will cover basic AI concepts, its applications in various fields, ethical considerations, fairness, and accountability.

The universities will design their course materials according to their academic requirements.

The HEC announced that the mandatory AI course will be implemented in all degree programs starting from the upcoming fall semester.
