ISLAMABAD: The government has introduced a new QR code-based system to streamline electricity subsidy distribution for low-consumption domestic users under the Federal Cross Subsidy Program 2026.
Domestic consumers consuming electricity of less than 200 units a month will get their subsidies verified through this system as per the statements of the officials from the Power Division of the government.
As part of the new initiative, consumers eligible for the subsidy would get special QR codes embedded on their electricity bills. They would have to scan these QR codes to go to a government-run website.
In order to become eligible for the subsidy program, consumers would have to provide their electricity bill 14-digit reference number alongside their national identity card particulars. One-time password (OTP) would be provided to them on their mobile phone.
According to the officials, the purpose of this initiative is to ensure that people do not exploit the system using multiple electricity meters in one family home.
This initiative would be open to beneficiaries of the Benazir Income Support Program, daily wage earners, and domestic consumers consuming less than 200 electricity units per month.
Authorities have advised consumers to ensure that the name printed on their electricity bill matches the name on their national identity card to avoid registration issues.
For citizens without smartphones or limited digital literacy, facilitation desks and help camps have been established at deputy commissioner offices and union council levels to assist with registration.
Officials added that users facing issues with QR code scanning can also manually register through the official Cross Subsidy Program portal.
The Power Division said the digitized system is expected to enhance transparency, improve efficiency, and ensure direct delivery of financial relief to deserving households.
