Austria is offering eligible skilled foreign workers an opportunity to live and work in the country through its Red-White-Red Card programme, which provides a legal pathway to employment and residence for applicants who meet the required criteria.
The programme covers several categories, including highly qualified professionals, skilled workers in specified occupations, graduates of Austrian universities and start-up founders.
According to official Austrian information, the Red-White-Red Card is generally issued for 24 months. During this period, holders are authorised to work for the employer specified in their application.
However, relevant work experience or a desire to find employment in Austria alone does not guarantee eligibility. Applicants must meet the specific requirements for their respective categories.
For Pakistani skilled workers, the process generally requires proof of relevant professional training or qualifications, a formal job offer from an Austrian employer and, where applicable, the required points under the relevant eligibility system.
Applicants are assessed on factors such as educational qualifications, vocational training, relevant work experience, age and language proficiency, depending on the category under which they apply.
Prospective applicants are advised to prepare their technical certificates, evidence of professional experience and documents demonstrating their German or English language skills, where required.
Being in an occupation experiencing labour shortages in Austria does not automatically qualify a foreign worker for the programme. Applicants must satisfy the conditions of the relevant category, and authorities assess their qualifications and supporting documents as part of the application process.
Recognition requirements also vary by profession. While formal recognition of foreign qualifications is not mandatory for most non-regulated occupations, certain regulated professions, including healthcare and nursing, require official recognition or authorisation before applicants can practise.
The programme also offers a potential route to greater employment flexibility. Eligible Red-White-Red Card holders may apply for a Red-White-Red Card Plus after meeting the applicable conditions. The latter provides broader access to the Austrian labour market.
Pakistani applicants are advised to verify the current list of eligible occupations, job offer requirements, salary conditions, language criteria and qualification requirements through official Austrian sources before applying.
They should also confirm the legitimacy of any job offer and avoid relying solely on claims made by agents or unofficial recruitment channels.
