PESHAWAR: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Internal Accountability Committee has sent a formal communication to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Local Government, Meena Khan Afridi following allegations of irregularities in the Peshawar street lights installation project.

According to complaints received by the committee, the Directorate of Eastern Zone Peshawar reportedly engaged in “mis-procurement” during the installation of street lights across various neighbourhood councils. The committee’s notice highlighted that out of 32 companies participating in the tender process, 31 were disqualified on technical grounds, leaving only one favoured company, Mian Ghazi Enterprises JV, eligible for the contract.

Preliminary investigations by the committee further revealed a startling detail: the company granted the contract had previously been blacklisted by the same procuring department.

The PTI committee welcomed the department’s decision to initiate a fact-finding inquiry and urged that the report be made public promptly. It also called for strict legal and disciplinary action against all individuals involved in the alleged irregularities.

Additionally, the committee recommended that the minister share detailed information about the bidding process and the executive summary of the ongoing inquiry with the committee to ensure transparency and maintain public trust.
