Rawalpindi Transporters and drivers of goods vehicles coming from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to Punjab and especially Rawalpindi have strongly protested against the behavior of Rawalpindi Police and traffic officials.
The drivers maintain that they are being targeted with “unjustified fines” and “monthly extortion”.
Affected drivers and transport union representatives says Vehicles are kept waiting for hours at police checkpoints at the entrances of Rawalpindi despite the documents being completed and are allowed to pass only after paying “khushi” (bribe).
According to drivers, challans are issued for trivial reasons or without any reason, the amount of which is more than the entire daily wage of a poor driver.
Officials are behaving in a derogatory manner, particularly by stopping vehicles with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa number plates, which is affecting inter-provincial trade and travel.
Transporters have demanded the Punjab government and IG Punjab to take immediate action against corrupt officials of Rawalpindi Police. They have threatened that if this trend is not stopped, they will Stop the supply of all goods vehicles coming from Peshawar to Rawalpindi.
