DHAKA: Bangladesh’s former cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan has criticized the interim government’s decision to prevent the national cricket team from participating in the T20 World Cup earlier this year, calling it a significant mistake.
This year’s T20 World Cup, held in February and March, marked the first ICC event since 1999 in which Bangladesh was absent. After Bangladesh’s withdrawal from the tournament, the ICC invited Scotland to replace them in the event.
Addressing an event in Mumbai, Shakib stated that Bangladesh’s absence from the world cup was a very sad occasion for the country as they were having a very strong affinity towards cricket and it was really a big mistake on the part of the government.
As a result of the disagreement between two cricket boards, BCB pulled out of the T20 world cup after BCCI withdrew the best fast bowler of the Bangladeshi team, Mustafizur Rahman, from their IPL franchise.
His comment has generated a lot of discussion amongst all nationals about the role of government in making such decisions for the participation of sports team in international competitions.
