PESHAWAR: An alarming increase in HIV (AIDS) cases has been recorded in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where hundreds of new patients have been registered in the first four months of this year.
According to the latest data released by Director AIDS Control Program Dr. Tariq Hayat, 481 new HIV cases have been registered from across the province in the last four months. After the increase in these new cases, the total number of infected patients in the province has increased to 10,281, while this number was recorded at 9,800 by the end of 2025.
Giving details of the data, Dr. Tariq Hayat said that the percentage of men among the infected people is the highest. The patients registered so far include 7,178 men, 2,381 women and 235 transgender people. The most unfortunate aspect is that 487 children under the age of 15 have also been found to be infected with this deadly disease.
Medical experts have expressed deep concern over the increasing number of cases in the province. Health department officials say that although all necessary medical facilities and medicines are being provided to the patients under the AIDS Control Program, the spread of this disease cannot be stopped by government efforts alone. According to officials, public awareness, preventive measures and social awareness in this regard are the only way to control this epidemic.
