WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said that despite agreeing on certain things, Iran had rejected clauses concerning stopping uranium enrichment and being a non-nuclear nation.

According to international news agencies, President Trump reiterated his stance about ensuring that Iran could never possess nuclear weapons at any cost.

Trump criticized the steps taken by Iran, calling the shutting down of the Strait of Hormuz as irrational. According to him, 34 vessels have crossed the Strait of Hormuz yesterday, which was the highest figure before the threat of Iran closing this vital sea route came into existence.

Furthermore, US President criticized the western nations, saying that US has always been against Iran, whereas others did not have the courage to do the same.

He said that now, there is a blockade on Iran’s navy and many nations have volunteered to assist, but the US does not need any help from others anymore for any military engagement against Iran.

He said that Iran contacted the US and is willing to make a deal with the US. However, besides settling a few issues, Iran refused to adhere to the rules of uranium enrichment and to having nuclear weapons.

In addition, Trump reiterated that large oil tankers and ships are arriving in the U.S., eager to buy high-quality oil from America.

Trump further warned that after dealing with Iran, Cuba could be next, where the people are under the grip of an authoritarian regime.

Iran’s Foreign Minister: We were inches away from ‘Islamabad MoU’

Meanwhile, after 47 years of stalled negotiations, high-level talks between the United States and Iran came close to reaching a historic agreement aimed at ending the ongoing conflict between the two nations. However, just as the two sides were about to sign the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” (MoU), the deal collapsed, with Iranian officials accusing the U.S. of shifting its demands and taking a maximalist position and aggressive stance.

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, voiced his frustration on social media, lamented the development, stating that the country had gone through the lengthy talks “in good faith” in order to settle the dispute. Although they were on the verge of making a breakthrough in the peace process, Araghchi pointed out that many issues had made it impossible for them to seal the deal.

“Encountered maximalism, shifting goalposts, and blockade. Zero lessons learned,” Araghchi tweeted.

The talks had reached an agreement on several vital matters, but were stalled due to fresh conditions laid down by the United States, which were not to the liking of Iran.

There were also more serious repercussions for the failure of the talks, as the Iranian Foreign Minister stressed during his tweet, saying that “Good will begets good will. Enmity begets enmity.”
