PESHAWAR: To bring around 1,162 acres of barren land under cultivation, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has planned to construct ‘Sarkhwai’ Barani Dam in Mardan.
This news huge prject also aimed at providing water for irrigation and drinking purposes. The project estimated cost is Rs3 billion. Once completed, the dam is expected to boost agricultural production, improve farmers’ livelihoods and contribute to the local economy. Year-round availability of irrigation water would also enable farmers to increase productivity and expand cultivation.
The project was reviewed at a meeting held here with Special Assistant to the KP Chief Minister on Population Welfare Tufail Anjum in the chair. Director General Small Dams Engineer Akhtar Rashid, Director Small Dams Suleman Dawood, Deputy Director Small Dams Syed Suleman and other relevant officials attended the meeting.
Officials briefed the meeting on various aspects of the Sarkhwai Barani Dam, including its construction plan, importance and expected impact on agriculture and the local economy.
Speaking on the occasion, Tufail Anjum described the project as an important public welfare and agricultural initiative. He said the dam would help bring barren land under cultivation and provide farmers with a permanent and reliable source of irrigation water. He said completion of the project would significantly improve agricultural activities, increase production and help transform the farming sector in the area.
The Special Assistant said the provincial government was taking priority measures for public welfare and the development of agriculture. He added that water storage and irrigation projects in rural areas would help improve farmers’ financial conditions and strengthen the local economy.
Tufail Anjum directed the concerned authorities to complete all technical and administrative requirements related to the project in a timely manner and take effective steps to initiate construction so that people could benefit from the scheme at the earliest.
