BEIJING: China has strongly opposed the new round of US sanctions imposed on Iran, urging both parties to seek a resolution through political and diplomatic channels.
According to a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, such sanctions lack any basis in international law because they have not been authorized by the United Nations Security Council. Beijing called on all relevant parties to adopt a responsible attitude to help de-escalate tensions.
The development follows the United States’ decision to further ratchet up economic pressure on Iran by introducing a fresh set of sanctions. According to the US Department of Treasury, the latest actions specifically target Iran’s clandestine financial and “shadow banking” network. This network allegedly facilitates the transfer and repatriation of funds generated from oil and other exports. The measures primarily target front companies, exchange houses, and financial facilitators linked to Iranian banks.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Washington intends to enforce the toughest sanctions in history against Tehran. He further warned that countries insisting on maintaining business ties with Tehran will also face potential punitive measures.
