CALIFORNIA: WhatsApp is reportedly preparing to restrict access on older Android and iOS smartphones as part of a security update that could prevent users with outdated operating systems from logging into the popular messaging platform.

The Meta-owned messaging app is reportedly testing a new security feature that could display warnings on devices running unsupported or outdated operating systems. Once the restriction is fully implemented, affected users may be required to update their phone’s operating system to continue using WhatsApp.

According to reports, the feature is being tested through a server-side update, meaning the restrictions could be activated directly by WhatsApp without requiring users to install a specific app update.

How Will the New WhatsApp Restriction Work?

Under the reported system, users with outdated operating systems may receive warning notifications informing them that their devices no longer meet WhatsApp’s requirements.

A warning screen could appear when affected users attempt to access the app, advising them to update their phone’s operating system before logging in again.

Users may not be able to bypass the warning and continue using the service if their devices fail to meet the minimum system requirements.

If a compatible operating system update is available, users may be able to restore access by updating their phones. However, those whose devices cannot support a newer operating system may need to upgrade to a newer smartphone.

Which Android Phones Could Be Affected?

WhatsApp has reportedly already ended support for Android 5.0 and Android 5.1, making Android 6.0 the minimum supported version under the requirements described in the report.

This means smartphones running older Android versions could be affected if they cannot be upgraded to a compatible operating system.

Users are advised to check their phone’s Android version and look for available software updates to determine whether their devices meet WhatsApp’s requirements.

iPhone Users Face a New Requirement

According to the report, iPhone users will be required to run iOS 15.5 or a newer version from November 30, 2026, to continue using WhatsApp.

Owners of older iPhone models should check whether their devices support the required iOS version and install any available updates.

If an iPhone cannot be updated to the required version, its owner may eventually lose access to WhatsApp under the reported restrictions.

Has WhatsApp Announced the Final Implementation Date?

The report states that WhatsApp has not yet officially announced the final implementation date for the reported login restrictions.

It has also not provided a definitive list of every affected smartphone model or operating system.

Users with older devices should therefore check WhatsApp’s official support information before deciding whether they need to replace their phones.
