PARIS: WhatsApp has started giving access to some users to its new username feature, allowing them to create a unique username before it is rolled out to everyone. This feature lets users share a username instead of their phone number, making it easier to connect with new people while keeping their number private.

To create a username, users need to open Settings, go to Account, and tap Username. They can also choose who can contact them using the username. For extra security, WhatsApp lets users set a four-digit PIN that new contacts must enter before starting a chat.

If a username is already linked to a Facebook or Instagram account, WhatsApp may ask the user to confirm they own that account. This is meant to stop fake accounts and reduce the risk of scams. According to WABetaInfo, the feature is currently available to a small number of users, including some beta testers.

Those who have access will see a notification at the top of their chat list confirming that their username is ready to use. The feature is expected to reach more users in the coming weeks. If you don’t have it yet, you can check the

Username section in your profile. WhatsApp will let you know when the feature becomes available for your account.
WhatsApp knows that some people, like creators, small businesses, and organizations may want to maintain a consistent presence online. For them, we reserved an option to claim their existing Instagram or Facebook username on WhatsApp.
Usernames are WhatsApp’s latest step to make WhatsApp even more private. There’s no directory to browse, and no suggestions. People will need to know your exact username to contact you for the first time.
