CARACAS: Venezuela’s interim president, Rodriguez, said nearly all government officials in the coastal state of La Guaira were killed in the devastating earthquakes that struck the country earlier this week.

According to reports, the death toll in the aftermath of the earthquake has reached 2,595, while authorities warn that more deaths might come to light as search and rescue operations proceed in the affected areas.

Addressing the press, Rodriguez revealed that the coastal area of La Guaira has witnessed severe destruction and mentioned that nearly all government officials in the region have died due to the disasters caused by the earthquakes.

The official added that the government and IMF are setting up a $200 million reconstruction fund for the rebuilding process of houses and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the number of buildings destroyed completely due to the earthquakes stands at 179 and search and rescue operations are underway in the regions most affected by the tremors.

Earlier, Venezuela was hit by two earthquakes of magnitudes 7.5 and 7.2 respectively within 40 seconds of each other.

Earlier, a series of powerful earthquakes that recently struck Venezuela have resulted in the tragic deaths of the wife and two children of Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo, according to international media reports.

The club representing the player confirmed the heartbreaking news in an official statement, expressing deep condolences to Trejo and his family.

Reports suggest that the wife of Trejo, Yanina Marianela, and their children, namely, Aaron Trejo and Ainahua Trejo, were present in the coastal zone of Playa Grande during the tragedy when their house collapsed.

The family members were first reported to be missing after the earthquake, however, their bodies were later found dead.

It has been reported that at the time of the accident, Trejo was present in the capital city of Caracas along with his teammates getting ready for the next game. The player had earlier posted on social media, seeking prayers and help from the general public to find his family.

It has been reported by the United Nations that about 6.76 million people have been affected by the earthquakes that took place on June 24, out of which more than 1,000 have died.
