The United States announced murder charges against former Cuban President Raúl Castro on Thursday, putting pressure on the island’s communist government.
According to US officials, the acting US attorney general has accused Raúl Castro of conspiring to kill American citizens. Five other people have also been named in the case.
The case concerns the operation of Cuban warplanes in 1996; the indictment also includes charges of murder and destroying aircraft. Four American citizens were killed in the incident. The Cuban government rejected the indictment against Raúl Castro as illegal.
It should be noted that in a media interview yesterday, US President Donald Trump accused Cuba of terrorist and intelligence operations and said that he would not stop until the Cuban people were freed, and that the United States would not tolerate an enemy state 90 miles from its coast.
It is a significant escalation of the Trump administration’s campaign to oust the country’s six-decades-old communist regime. However, the world has been criticising the Trump administration for its illegal actions against other countries.
