The torrential rains that have been continuing for the past 24 hours in the southern district of Bannu have caused widespread destruction and so far, nine people have died in various incidents of roof and wall collapse, most of whom are innocent children.

According to rescue sources, a total of more than 40 people has been injured who have been shifted to hospitals for medical assistance. Two children died on the spot as a result of a verandah collapse, while 35 people have been injured in other rain related incident, some of whom are said to be in critical condition.

In Walkhai Mamakhel area two children died and one person was seriously injured, and a woman lost her life when the roof of a house collapsed. Three children died and two were injured in the incident that took place in Mandan and Shami Kallah.

The rains have caused not only loss of life but also caused property damage in different areas of Bannu, the roofs of an old hut (square) and several mud houses have collapsed. Rainwater has also caused severe damage to farmers’ crops and livestock in low-lying areas.

Rescue 1122 and district administration staff are busy in relief operations in the affected areas. Rescue sources say that all available resources are being used to extract people buried under the rubble. The injured have been shifted to District Headquarters Hospital Bannu where an emergency has been imposed.

The Deputy Commissioner Bannu has appealed to the citizens to stay away from mud walls and dilapidated houses during the rain. The administration has issued an alert in view of further rains and has directed the public to immediately report any emergency situation on the helpline.
