PESHAWAR: A terrorist allegedly involved in the targeted killing of religious scholar Maulana Idrees has been killed during a joint operation by police and law enforcement agencies in Khyber district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to a statement issued by police, the operation resulted in an exchange of fire in which the suspected militant was killed. A police officer was also injured after coming under fire during the operation.
Police said the slain suspect was affiliated with a proscribed organization that had allegedly planned the killing of Maulana Idrees to promote sectarian violence.
According to investigators, the attack on Maulana Idrees was carried out by a motorcycle-borne assailant who opened fire on his vehicle.
Police said the Inspector General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police would submit a report on the latest development to the Ministry of Interior.
Maulana Idrees was killed in a targeted attack in Charsadda on May 5, 2026. Police had said at the time that four armed men riding motorcycles intercepted the religious scholar’s vehicle and opened indiscriminate fire, killing him at the scene.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had expressed grief over the killing and said the entire nation shared the bereaved family’s sorrow. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister had also condemned the incident and sought an immediate report from the provincial police chief.
Maulana Idrees Tarangzai was regarded as an influential religious and political figure in the area. His killing had triggered mourning in Charsadda and other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
