PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has given in-principle approval for the launch of the Ehsaas Buzurg Card, which will provide free travel on Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services to senior citizens across the province.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi to review the Ehsaas Buzurg Card initiative.
Under the scheme, citizens aged 60 and above will be eligible for free travel on BRT buses.
Officials briefed the meeting that the initiative is expected to cost around Rs935 million annually, with the provincial government bearing the entire cost.
According to the briefing, the issuance of Ehsaas Buzurg Cards will begin within the next five months after completing the verification of eligible senior citizens through the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).
The meeting was also informed that a fine of Rs500 would be imposed on citizens found misusing the Ehsaas Buzurg Card.
He said providing senior citizens with dignified, convenient and free transportation was part of the government’s public-oriented agenda.
He added that the provincial government would continue taking effective and sustainable measures for public welfare to further improve the provision of basic services to citizens.
