ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Haroonur Rashid has endorsed the proposal for the creation of new provinces, saying it could improve governance, promote economic development and strengthen political stability in the country.
Speaking at a Full Court Reference held at the Supreme Court in honour of Justice Musarrat Hilali on the occasion of her retirement, Rashid said the SCBA supported the proposal for creating more provinces. The reference was headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi and attended by Supreme Court judges in person and through video link. Senior members of the legal fraternity, representatives of the SCBA and Pakistan Bar Council, Additional Attorney General Chaudhry Aamir Rehman, court officers and media representatives also attended the event.
Rashid said the creation of more provinces could lead to a more effective governance system through devolved and equitable administration at the grassroots level. He added that it could create equal opportunities for economic development and contribute to greater political stability.
According to him, more provinces could also help improve people’s living standards by addressing economic challenges faced by communities across the country. The SCBA president also called on all political parties to agree on a common agenda and hold meaningful and serious negotiations on unresolved national issues.
It is worth mentioning here that Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi recently put forward the proposal of creating new provinces in the country. Recently, while addressing the Pakistan Economic Summit 2026, the interior minister had urged all political parties to resolve various national issues, including the question of creating new provinces. He termed this the only solution to improving the country’s overall condition, which he said had “collapsed”.
