WASHINGTON: Former US Marine Robert Gilman, who had been imprisoned in Russia for 4 years, has been released and has arrived in the United States.
According to US media, Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to pardon Gilman and he was released on humanitarian grounds due to health issues.
US President Donald Trump welcomed the release of the former US Marine and said that after talks with Putin, Gilman’s release on humanitarian grounds became possible.
Trump added that Russia did not demand the release of any Russian prisoner in return.
Gilman was arrested in Moscow in 2022 on charges of assaulting a Russian police officer. He had been in Russian custody for the past 4 years.
