ISLAMABAD: The federal government has once again begun considering imposing a “smart lockdown” across Pakistan in response to rising petroleum prices amid the ongoing US-Iran war.
According to Samaa TV report, under the proposal being discussed, Friday, Saturday and Sunday could be designated as holidays, with restrictions imposed on unnecessary movement during the three-day period.
Sources said the government is examining several options to limit non-essential travel and mobility on the three days. Normal government, business and public activities would continue during the remaining four days of the week.
Authorities are also assessing the potential impact of a three-day smart lockdown on government operations, businesses and public activities before reaching a final decision.
The proposals will be reviewed in detail, after which a comprehensive report is expected to be submitted to Prime Minister for consideration. A final decision on the proposed smart lockdown is expected based on the recommendations contained in the report.
Before any decision on the three-day holidays is made, ministries and relevant institutions will also be consulted for their recommendations.
The proposed measures are primarily aimed at saving fuel, reducing unnecessary travel and limiting energy consumption amid concerns over the impact of rising petroleum prices on the country’s economy and consumers.
The government is expected to finalize the proposal after reviewing the recommendations and assessing its potential economic and administrative consequences.
