The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has expressed reservations over the smart lockdown and has taken the stance that the final decision will be taken in the cabinet meeting.
According to sources, due to the current business situation, it has been decided to close markets at 9 PM and wedding halls at 10 PM under the smart lockdown. However, the provincial government has sought proposals from departments in this regard, and the final decision will be taken in light of these proposals.
Reports have also been sought regarding 3-day holidays in educational institutions. According to official sources, the business community has opposed the smart lockdown in view of the current business situation.
Sources said the KP government wants to take all stakeholders into confidence before imposing any such restrictions, and the final decision will be made after the cabinet review.
The federal government has directed all provinces to close markets by 9 PM and wedding halls by 10 PM to save electricity and reduce fuel consumption, as Pakistan is facing an oil supply crisis due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and tensions at Bab al-Mandeb.
The government is trying to cut its oil import bill and manage the power shortfall. However, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and the trader community have opposed the move, stating that business activities are already suffering due to inflation and the current security situation. They believe early closure will cause further financial losses to small traders and wedding hall owners.
That is why the KP government has expressed reservations and has not implemented the decision yet. It has sought suggestions from various departments, including Energy, Labour, Education, and the Chamber of Commerce.
