NEW DELHI: Bollywood comedian and actor Rajpal Yadav has faced strong criticism from the Indian Supreme Court for failing to deposit money despite an earlier court order in a cheque bounce case.
According to reports, the Supreme Court had given Yadav two weeks to deposit Rs20 million (INR 2 crore). However, the amount was not deposited within the stipulated period.
During the hearing, Yadav’s lawyer reportedly argued that the complainant was not poor. The remark drew a sharp response from Justice Joymalya Bagchi.
The judge reportedly told the lawyer that he should know when to speak and remarked that “your place is in jail.”
The court subsequently ordered Rajpal Yadav to deposit Rs20 million by Tuesday.
The case dates back to 2010 and relates to financial assistance of Rs50 million (INR 5 crore) obtained for the production of a film. The dispute reportedly arose after cheques issued for repayment of the amount were dishonoured.
