ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked more than 1.065 million URLs containing or linked to obscene content on social media platforms, according to official documents.
The documents show that 563 URLs related to obscene content are currently under review, while 9,528 have been rejected. More than 1.065 million URLs in the category have been blocked.
The PTA also received 179,285 URLs for blocking over terrorism-related content. Of these, 141,897 URLs were blocked, while 23,241 remain under review.
According to the documents, 136,891 URLs were processed under the category of content deemed contrary to the sanctity of Islam, while 125,427 URLs were processed for content relating to Pakistan’s security and defence.
The authority blocked 74,059 URLs in the security and defence category. Meanwhile, 76,526 URLs were processed under the category covering sectarian and hate speech.
In the proxy category, the PTA processed 10,319 URLs and blocked 10,318 of them.The documents further show that 44,200 URLs were processed under the defamation and impersonation category, with 17,356 subsequently blocked.
Overall, the PTA blocked 1,542,800 URLs across various categories. A further 76,874 URLs were under review, while 106,629 URLs were rejected, according to the documents.
