ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has signed the summary for the imposition of emergency and Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution.
The development follows approval by the federal cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, which endorsed the imposition of emergency measures in the province amid concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation and rising terrorism.
According to the report, the federal cabinet reviewed the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in detail and received a briefing on the challenges posed by increasing terrorist activity.
Following the cabinet’s approval, the Prime Minister’s Office sent an advice to the president for the implementation of the proposed measures.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Talal Chaudhry reportedly visited the President’s House to deliver the summary.
In a statement issued after the cabinet meeting, the government said that Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution would be invoked in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, paving the way for emergency measures and Governor’s Rule.
The cabinet also discussed the provincial government’s alleged lack of cooperation in the fight against terrorism, as cited in the report, and recommended that the prime minister proceed with the constitutional measures.
