ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) has made fire safety training a mandatory component of the house job program across all medical and dental colleges nationwide.
PM&DC President Prof. Dr. Rizwan Taj announced that the initiative focuses on proactive disaster preparedness rather than relying solely on external emergency response teams during crises. Under the new mandate, house officers will undergo training in fire hazard identification, proper usage of firefighting equipment, emergency drills, and procedures for safe patient evacuation.
Additionally, teaching hospitals and medical colleges will hold routine fire safety drills, while existing institutional safety protocols undergo a comprehensive review. Prof. Taj reaffirmed that the safety of healthcare staff, patients, and students remains the council’s top priority, adding that the safety modules may expand to cover undergraduate and postgraduate medical students in the near future.
