PESHAWAR: Inmates at Peshawar Central Jail have announced a protest against alleged delays in the processing of remission, discriminatory treatment and failure to implement their legal rights.
According to sources, the prisoners have warned that they would resort to a hunger strike, refuse prison labour and boycott the daily headcount if their demands are not addressed.
The inmates alleged that cases involving prisoners eligible for remission were being delayed. They also claimed that some influential and affluent prisoners had allegedly been granted concessions or released through remission.
The protesting prisoners demanded a transparent and impartial inquiry into the allegations and called for all remission and release cases to be reviewed fairly.
They appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan, the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court and other senior authorities to take immediate notice of the matter. They also urged senior officials to visit Peshawar Central Jail, hear their grievances directly and review complaints concerning remission.
The inmates further called on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, law minister and prisons minister to take immediate action and visit the jail.
They demanded an impartial review of complaints concerning remission and other legal rights, and urged authorities to provide eligible prisoners with relief in accordance with the law.
The prisoners said they would no longer remain silent and warned that their protest would continue until their legitimate demands were addressed and tangible progress was made on their remission-related grievances.
