The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued new directives to all satellite television channels, instructing news and current affairs broadcasters to avoid live coverage of unpleasant incidents.

The authority said the ban on live broadcasts of incidents such as explosions, firing and terrorist attacks remains in place.

In its directives, PEMRA instructed satellite TV channels to comply with the restraining order issued on February 20, 2023. It also directed broadcasters to air only information verified by the relevant department or law enforcement agencies.

The authority further instructed all channels to effectively implement a time-delay mechanism during broadcasts and establish independent editorial boards.

PEMRA warned that violations of the directives could lead to legal action under Sections 29-A, 30 and 33 of the PEMRA Ordinance.
