KHYBER: Pakistan has officially approved the transit of United Nations humanitarian assistance through the Torkham border crossing, allowing food supplies and essential medicines to be transported into Afghanistan. The decision reflects Pakistan’s continued support for international humanitarian efforts aimed at assisting vulnerable communities facing food insecurity and healthcare challenges.

According to official sources, the United Nations plans to dispatch approximately 1,000 containers of humanitarian relief to Afghanistan over the course of one week. The shipments will be delivered in phases to ensure smooth customs processing and efficient cross-border transportation.

On the first day of the operation, 25 aid containers arrived at the Torkham border. Customs authorities successfully completed the clearance process for 21 containers, which are scheduled to be handed over to Afghan authorities before proceeding into Afghanistan. The remaining containers are expected to be processed shortly in accordance with established customs and security procedures.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the federal government has issued the required No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the movement of UN humanitarian cargo. The ministry stated that the approval was granted following the special directives and final authorization of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Officials emphasized that the transit permission is based solely on humanitarian considerations and demonstrates Pakistan’s commitment to facilitating international relief efforts in coordination with the United Nations. The aid shipment includes essential food items and life-saving medicines intended to support Afghan civilians affected by ongoing humanitarian and economic challenges.

The Torkham border remains one of the most significant trade and humanitarian corridors between Pakistan and Afghanistan, playing a crucial role in the delivery of emergency assistance and regional cooperation. By facilitating the safe and timely movement of UN relief supplies, Pakistan aims to contribute to international efforts to address the humanitarian needs of the Afghan population while strengthening collaboration with global humanitarian organizations.
