ISLAMABAD: Over two million smart meters have been installed across the country in efforts to modernize the country’s electricity distribution network as per a written reply furnished by the Ministry of Energy to the Senate.
The ministry told the Senators that altogether 2,125,296 smart meters have been installed to date by the various electricity distribution companies of the country.
Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has installed the largest number of smart meters at 1,153,556.
Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) has installed 348,135 smart meters, while Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) has installed 229,719 smart meters and Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has installed 119,372 smart meters.
According to information provided by the Ministry of Energy, Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) has installed 111,948 smart meters, while Peshawar Electric Power Company (PESCO) has installed 60,685 and K-Electric has installed 50,599 smart meters.
Other electricity distribution companies’ figures of smart meter installations include Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) which has installed 19,620, Sukkur Electric Power Company (SEPCO) which has installed 13,432, Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) has installed 9,194, and Hazara Electric Power Company (HAZECO) has installed 7,659 smart meters.
Tribal Areas Electric Supply Company (TESCO) has installed 1,377 smart meters, as per ministry.
The Ministry of Energy informed that installation of smart meters will assist in improving the monitoring of electricity consumption, enhance the meter-reading system and make the power distribution network efficient.
It is expected that the extension of smart meters will help the electricity companies have accurate consumption data of the users.
