HANGU: At least nine police personnel, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), were martyred and 28 others injured after terrorists launched a coordinated attack on the Khazina Banda police checkpost in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Hangu district, police officials said.
According to Kohat Regional Police Officer (RPO) Irfan Tariq, heavily armed militants targeted the checkpost, triggering an intense exchange of fire. Police personnel mounted a strong resistance, killing eight militants and injuring six others. A search and clearance operation is continuing in the area.
The RPO said DSP Diyar Khan was martyred while leading the defence of the checkpost. Eight other police personnel also embraced martyrdom during the gun battle.
The martyred officers include DSP Diyar Khan, ASI Kifayatullah, ASI Qasid Ali, Head Constable Imtiaz, Lance Head Constable Sanaullah, Constable Mudassar, Constable Shaban Ali, and two other personnel.
A total of 28 police personnel sustained injuries during the attack and the ensuing operation. The injured include DSP Mujahid Hussain and 23 other officers, while five personnel stationed inside the Khazina Banda checkpost were also wounded. All the injured were shifted to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Hangu.
After receiving initial medical treatment, DSP Mujahid Hussain, ASI Ahmed Rahman, Constable Asif, Constable Salil Khan, Lance Head Constable Shakeel and Constable Mohibullah were referred to Peshawar for specialised care.
RPO Irfan Tariq praised the police personnel for their bravery, saying they fought courageously until their last breath and thwarted the militants’ attack despite suffering heavy casualties.
Police said security in the area has been further tightened, while search and clearance operations are continuing to eliminate any remaining militants and ensure the area is fully secured.
