KOHAT: At least nine people were killed and five others injured after a residential house collapsed during a severe rainstorm in the Malgin area of Lachi tehsil in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kohat district.
According to rescue officials, 14 people were trapped beneath the debris when the house caved in. The victims included a large number of women and children.
Rescue 1122 teams rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the emergency call and launched a rescue operation. Four ambulances from Kohat, two from Karak and a recovery vehicle were deployed to assist in the operation.
With the help of local residents, rescue workers pulled all those trapped from the rubble, provided first aid and shifted the injured and the deceased to nearby hospitals.
Rescue authorities said the injured are receiving the best possible medical treatment, while debris removal and search operations are continuing to ensure that no one remains trapped under the collapsed structure.
Meanwhile, torrential rains also triggered flash floods in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer district, causing widespread destruction in several areas.
Floodwaters inundated parts of Thor, where water and debris entered homes, forcing residents to face severe hardships. The flooding also washed away agricultural land, standing crops and trees.
The main road linking Thor has been blocked at several points, disrupting traffic, while electricity supply to the affected areas has been suspended, adding to residents’ difficulties.
Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from unsafe buildings as adverse weather conditions continue to affect parts of the country.
