PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sohail Afridi, former provincial ministers Kamran Bangash and Taimur Saleem Jhagra are among five suspects named in the May 9 Radio Pakistan attack case.

The police investigation officer appeared before the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) and submitted the challan to the District Public Prosecutor. According to police, the challan has been prepared against the accused for their alleged involvement in the attack, vandalism and arson at the Radio Pakistan building during the May 9 protests.

The case stems from the violent protests that erupted across Pakistan on May 9-10, 2023, after the arrest of former Prime Minister and PTI founder Imran Khan from the Islamabad High Court premises.

In Peshawar, hundreds of protesters attacked the historic Radio Pakistan building which started transmission in 1935. According to officials, the mob ransacked studios, newsrooms, looted equipment including cameras and microphones, destroyed nearly 100-year-old archival records, burnt the Chaghi mountain model and set vehicles and parts of the four-storey building on fire.

Police registered a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act. More than 100 PTI workers and several lawmakers were already nominated, and trial is underway in the Anti-Terrorism Court.
