PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has proposed major changes to the procedure for the appointment and transfer of police officers under a draft of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Act 2026.
According to the draft, appointments and transfers of police officers would be carried out under the province’s Rules of Business, with the provincial government being given powers to oversee the appointment, transfer and performance of police officers.
The draft proposes that the appointment and transfer of officers at the DIG level would require approval from the chief minister.
The proposed legislation also includes a mechanism for accountability of police officers. A committee comprising senior police officers has been proposed to monitor police complaints and other related matters.
The draft further outlines procedures for disciplinary action and investigations into complaints against police officers.
The proposed Police Act 2026 seeks to introduce changes to the existing system established under the Police Act 1985, including reforms concerning appointments, transfers, oversight and accountability.
The draft also proposes a special quota for the children of police martyrs, aimed at providing them with additional opportunities within the police system.
